Wednesday 25th January Throop, loads of chub!

Well after another good nights sleep in Ringwood I was around to see Martine in Avon Angling to pick up another 6 pints of red maggots.

I had decided to try the Throop beat two stretch again today. The weather was a perfect overcast and dull with little wind.

I decide to fish one of the swims I fished last week. Being first on the fishery at 7.30am saw me heading off towards the swim.  It’s a 4ft deep good steady flow close to a far side tree in the river. The chub like the sanctuary of the branches and the idea is to lure them out so that you can then fish for them with some sort of safety.

I started out with the usual 3aaa float and size 20 hook and 2.5lb hooklink terminal tackle. First though it’s essential to bait the swim for a good 20 minutes or more before casting to get the chub chasing those maggots.

First trot down the float buried under and I hooked a chub which after about 15 seconds or so slipped the hook.

Then over the next two hours I caught 6  more chub between 1lb and 4lbs plus. It’s great to see that there are a good few younger fish coming through. I took a couple of photo’s of the 4lbers.

4lbs plus chub

I must admit none of the bigger fish seem to be putting in an appearance.

Chub just over 4lbs

So with me thinking that I had caught a good few fish from the swim it was time to move on. However Irish George arrived and we ended up nattering about the terrible barbel sport he has had this year. He was using bread for bait today the first time for years he told me!

I said that in clear water conditions the chub love bread.
Soon I was heading downstream to fish a deeper pool where there are some much larger chub. The wind was increasing and making presentation more difficult as time went on. I had a few minnows but felt that something would come along and it did in the shape of a 4lbs 15oz chub which was perfect in every way. A passing angler took the photo’s for me, however they didn’t come out that well. Unfortunately he had a problem with his hand which I could see while he took the photo. However not to embarrass him I said they came out well and thanked him very much.
The wind was now causing me so many problems that it was next to impossible to trot the far side of the river without the float being dragged off course. No chub could be fooled by this.
I moved down to a swim which produced about 7 chub for me, However they were all small fish between 1lb and just under 4lbs. It’s great to think that these are the chub of the future. Last light came fast and I stayed on ledgering for a couple of hours and I had no interest at all. The chub at the moment are only interested in the float method. Anyone ledgering with a swim feeder or any other bait are having blanks.
