Short session on the Hampshire Avon

I was thinking of walking the stretch where I fish on the H.Avon as some things had changed on the fishery and I wanted to walk and take a look at the swims and see where the chub were hiding.

I walked the stretch for 6hrs taking note of where the large chub were and also feeding them. It was after lunch when I got the tackle out and put some hemp into a swim that contains some good chub. A mate of mine Paul came along to take a look at me fishing. We were feeding a shallow swim where one or two chub were taking the maggots as they drifted down in the flow. One was certainly 6lbs plus and a few of the others looked good.

So out came the float rod and I had the first opportunity to go for them. First trot down bang the float went under and soon I was playing a good chub on the very light tackle. Paul did the honors with the net. It wasn’t the biggest fish however at 5lbs 4oz still a nice chub.

Paul then had a go and caught another chub quickly of 4lbs 10oz just 3 oz short of his pb. He also landed a small perch his first from the stretch.

After moving swims we decided to feeder fish. These chub though were very cute and wouldn’t pick up the maggots on the hook. We even tried float fishing for them and they would take every maggot other than the ones on the hook. We could have used finer diameter line however that would have possibly left hooks in fish if they got under the tree branches on the far side.

So we had to grin and bare our teeth at the chub. I’m sure had we stayed later we would have caught a few more, but I had enough for the day as it had been very warm and I need to drive the 1.5hr journey home.

Still Paul will soon catch his pb chub of over 5lbs very soon for sure.
