To reach double figures of 6lb plus chub for the traveling angler is a great achievement. However I was still able to complete some short sessions on the river as Mrs P and me were staying close to the river. Holidays had been cancelled due to covid 19 and so we were staying in Fordingbridge more frequently. The 11th chub of the season came soon again this time it was 6lbs 6oz and was the only fish I had caught from the swim. Pellets was the bait once again.
I had seen a few really big barbel in the swim and spent the entire day trying to trick them. Two of them spooked off the bait and then the larger one refused to play ball. I lay on my stomach all day watching them come in feed a little and then disappear. It was a difficult day and the largest fish was over 14lbs.
Still seldom complain about fishing there are people who would love to experience my angling life.

The memory is not what it used to be and having not written down the numbers of chub caught I can say without doubt this has been the best start to my chub fishing ever. I do know the number of 6lbs plus chub and some recollection of some others of epic tales and disappointments. […]

Well there we go the river in late August the river looked mature which means that the weed had probably reached its peak for the year. I really fancied a swim where I’ve seen a couple of big chub plas a few rather large barbel. Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley was down […]

Wow I’ve not posted too many blogs over the last couple of months however that needs to change. I have been fishing mostly on the H.Avon and some guiding on the D.Stour. Time has flown by. The last time I wrote on here I was on my 6th chub of 6lbs plus for the season. […]

I had a couple more short trips on the Avon over the last week. One was with a friend of mine Paul. I’ve not fished with him for sometime. He is a member of the syndicate but seldom fishes for chub. His pb was a modest 4lbs 12oz from Throop. Well at the end of […]

I didn’t fish Saturday as me and Mrs P had a lovely walk around the H.Avon and the New forest. We walked about 25000 steps which works out at about 12 miles. Lovely. Sunday was my last chance of fishing before heading back home. I had chatted to Andy (you should have been here yesterday) […]

Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley was down for the day. I was shopping for the morning and went to see him in the late afternoon. He was fishing a swim with a couple of chub moving up and down quickly. They would stop occasionally and feed. I would give him a running […]

I had a small window of opportunity one evening for a spot of chub fishing. The evening was a warm summer like one with a slight breeze and some high clouds. I had travelled down to Hampshire for the week. I started off in the same swim where I had a few big chub. This […]

July had just arrived and there were some more serious chub to be caught. Some fish had just spawned by the look of their condition around the vent and underbelly. I had thought about using maggots as bait as here didn’t seem to be too many minnows around. So I returned to a swim where […]

In the morning I had walked the entire stretch of beat 2 on Throop on the Dorset Stour and called in to the Avon at lunch time to find a couple of barbel that came up on the bait quickly together with a good few chub. That will do nicely I though as I ate […]
