Back on the Bristol Avon
I hadn't fished the BA for years in this area. I had an itch that needed scratching so I wandered around for a while looking to see if I could spot a barbel. I went to one of my favourite spots and found about 8 chub and a lone barbel of about 8lbs feeding on the pellets that I threw →
Frappers day on the H.Avon
Had a fan bloody tas tic day with Frappers on the H.Avon. It's a very long story but will try to tell it here. Steve won the Mk 4 cane Avon rod donated by Les Probert for the best regional organiser of the year and was presented at the AGM. We decided to get a bend in the old rod →
Hampshire Avon and a small barbel
Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley and I decided on another 2 days on the H.Avon. I had a friend Frappers coming down on one of the days. I thought about getting down there early however with the much needed rain pouring down I didn't leave until late in the morning. Andy did much the same. I arrived at →
2nd Day on the H.Avon
The day on the Stour had gone well with David he caught a couple of good chub and a roach of about 1lb. Andy (you should have been here yesterday ) Cowley had a great day whilst I was on the Stour he had this beautiful barbel of exactly 11lbs. On 6lb line whilst fishing for chub. That was great →
August and the heat continues
August started very hot again with little or no rain and temperatures in the 30's. Most of the clubs on the river Wye had stopped fishing. The only people that hadn't done so was the Wye and Usk Foundation. Which I found to be very strange. This is a short video showing my meadow from my drone. You can see there →
24th July H.Avon
So I ended the previous blog with saying so very very lucky. Well that has deserted me today. I could only fish for a few hrs this morning and fancied a go at a swim where in the past I had seen a few barbel. Well I turned up at 8am and found 6 barbel feeding on my baits (pellets →
19th and 20th July H.Avon
My partner in crime Andy (you should have been here yesterday) and I were down on the Avon for a couple of days. The weather had gotten even hotter if that was possible. Now I’m old enough in the tooth to remember the summer of 1976 which was one of the hottest and driest on record and this summer was →
10th July and another barbel
I only had a one day session after guiding on the river Wye for 2 days more of that later. The sun had been beating down relentless for the last 3 weeks no rain and no cool weather at all. People were getting worried about the welfare of barbel on the Trent, Severn and Wye. Some fatalities were accruing where →
3rd and 4th of July a big barbel and 2x6lb chub
July the 3rd and here we were again Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley starting another two day session on the H.Avon. The weather had been very hot now since the start of the season. The temperatures started to reach toward the 30’s. On the positive side the the visibility in the river improved vastly. Chub and barbel →
June 18th Hampshire Avon
This was the day England were playing in the world cup I think it was Tunisia. I had said to Andy (you should have been here yesterday) that I wanted to see the game so would leave the river early. I was still on a high from the opening day so little need to be eager. I wanted to walk →
June 17th Hampshire Avon
After a cracking June 16th and that 6lbs 15oz chub I moved to another stretch of the river. Normally there are a few chub and barbel around an island in the middle of the river. If they are not one side they are on the other side of the island. I baited a couple of swims on the way up and →
The start of the 2018 river season
Well after a rough but not shabby tench fishing season the river season was soon upon me. The weather had been warm and dry. My mate Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley and partner in crime had a great tench season on the Cotswold water park. The latterly east winds had proved to be difficult though. However here we were →
My tench fishing season for 2018
I've been so far behind with my blogs people have thought I had died or was ill. Pleased to say neither. Fit and healthy and taking Mrs P on holiday does take a time. Need to say here and now that the season was a dog for me. I had been fishing in Kent for some large tench which grow to →
Great carp action on floating baits
After my assaults on the tench or the non action in Kent it was time to obtain a bend in the rod. Now Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley had a right result earlier in the week. The sun had come out and he was off to fish a local water which contains some good size carp. He →
First couple of weeks Tench Fishing and Andy’s 60th birthday weekend
The winter has continued right into April with cold nights and day for that fact. I'm fishing some lakes in Kent this year. Not easy and a fair amount of travelling to be done from home. There are some good tench in these lakes and I'm hoping to perhaps get a double this year. I'm trying several types of baits to →
Dever Springs with Steve and Ross
I had given Steve a days fishing on Dever Springs for a 60th birthday present. It was difficult organising a day to link up as we both lost parents close to each other and I guess we were both busy. I arranged a date in March as normally there are still a few large brown trout in spring lake. Well that →
A couple of video’s 7lb chub and 12lb barbel
These 2 video's are the last that were taken for the end of the 2017-18 season https://youtu.be/SHCFNM1Q9oY https://youtu.be/Zr_R2fmdYkM
The last two days of the 2017 -18 river season
The time this year seems to have flown by. With Mum being ill and eventually passing away left me with plenty to do. I know it not an excuse however sometimes I just wasn’t interested in fishing. Then I think you get out of the habit and before you know it, it’s March. That’s the feeling I defiantly had as Andy →
Early March and the end is in sight.
Last year I decided to go on holiday for the last 2 weeks of the season and regretted it as most of my mates caught some special fish. The weather warmed up and they came on the feed. So this season I wasn’t going to be fooled. Well that’s what I thought. Mark Woodage (Woody) has been fishing the Avon a →
Late February on the H.Avon
The weather had been up and down temperature wise for early February. Not for Mrs. P and me. Normally at this time of year we head to the Caribbean for some winter sun for two weeks. This year we headed to Jamaica. Now we were told that there was a state of emergency announced a couple of weeks before our →
Perch fishing
We had plenty of the rain over the weekend and Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley and I decided to try for some perch on a commercial. We arrived to find one other angler there and he headed off to fish for perch. Andy and I decided to face the wind and fish next to each other. The bait →
A few days later in Jan 2018
I had been able to fish again on the Friday and headed down the Avon valley to see if I could temp a chub or two. My aim with the river being the same height was to fish the same swim. Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley was going to fish too. I arrived at 7.15 with a →
Early January 2018
Well the festive season was now and truly over other than the New Year. I had been staying in the Avon valley from 28th to 6th Jan. The weather was far from being kind to me strong winds rain and cold. No problem I thought there is plenty of time. Mrs P and me had a great New Year eve →
December 2017 fishing
December started off really cold with north winds blowing and snow showers. The river remained so low and clear making fishing difficult for chub. Barbel fishing pretty much on the back burner for the first couple of weeks. I fished the H Avon for a few days and it was tough going. I wasn't alone in this as others were →
