14th 6lb plus chub and a recapture.
A couple of days later I was returning once again and trotting a float through. This time the wind had eased and decided to complete some video work and try and get a bite, playing and landing a chub. I almost achieved this. I’m trying to edit it whilst I’m writing this.
The same process of pulting and trotting occupied most of the afternoon. I didn’t want to go less than the 4.12lb line I was using. The water was crystal clear and I’m sure it would be late on before them came on the feed. They were probably feeding but could work out which maggots had a hook in them.
I had decided to use the feeder rod today not because of the weather or wind it was purely to test out if there were any minnows about. The first few hrs I fed and trotted but other than a grayling of about 8oz nothing much came along. I decided to rest the swim and have a little break but continue pulting maggots. It was only for 15 minutes or so. It did the trick!
I recast out and first trot down I caught the biggest fish of the session. 6lbs 9oz on the scales. I turned out to be a repeat capture of the 6lbs 10oz chub a few days previous. I was off that dreaded number 13 6lb plus chub.
I had one other of about 4lbs. Guess what I lost another float towards evening and last light so put out the feeder rod with a 50g blackcap. As soon as I cast out I was getting plucks and pulls from fish. It didn’t look like minnows or little fish. I got some really positive tugs but no hook-ups. I had to recast several times before the rod belted over and I hooked a really hard fighting chub which I thought would be huge. Then in midstream I could see why. A pike of about 7lb had grabbed the chub which was about 4 lbs or so. He wouldn’t let go and I managed to land both. There wasn’t much damage to either fish and both swam off none the worst for the event.
So that was 3 chub for the afternoon.
