A short evening session on the H.Avon

I had a short window of opportunity to fish for a couple of hrs the evening before I take Ross fishing the next day on the H.Avon.

I put out some pellets in the same swim I had the 6lb 2oz and 5lbs 14oz the previous week. Sure enough after 20 mins or so the chub and a couple of barbel came out to feed. No rain had fallen and the river was low clear and uninspiring, however the sight of the chub gives you so much confidence.

The sun was warm and the temperature was 20c what a beautiful evening to be fishing the H Avon. The chub were scouring the river bed looking for the pellets that I had introduced.

I new I had one chance to catch a chub because rarely do you catch 2 in a short space of time. I continued to use the long hooklink approach to fooling the chub.

Out went the bait and after a couple of minutes the chub came out to feed again. You could see the chub quite clearly in the crystal clear water. I generally get the odd chub pick the pellet up and you get a tap on the rod top but no hook up. They feel the resistance and let go.

One fish though did make a mistake and the rod top pulled right around as I saw the chub try to make it under the willow branches.  The line and hook stayed sound as I drew it over the net. It looked big, a good depth and broad across the shoulders.

On the scales it went 5lbs 6oz.

5lbs 6oz

It looks much larger than it was.

That was it for the day. I hope I can get Ross something of that size.
