Cape verde fishing
Cape Verde Nov to Dec 2016
I had been looking forward to fishing on these wonderful islands again since last visiting one year previously. This time I would be fishing for the normal small fish that can be caught from the shore and the sharks that swim close by.
I took the normal light spinning rod with 25lb braid. With this thin diameter line in most instances you can hold the sea bed with 1.5oz.
I walked along the beach and found a couple of guys who were fishing for sharks. They though were much more serious than me as they often fished until 8pm meaning staying for 2 hrs after sunset.
Sure enough they were having some success and from my balcony I could see camera flashes illuminating some good sharks. They were catching them up to 40lbs, mostly black tipped and nurse sharks.
For the first week I was happy enough to land a few smaller fish, enjoying a couple of hours from 8am to 10.30am and then again in the late afternoon 4pm to 5.30pm.
The first week there was a good swell on the sea however as the second week came along the smaller fish were not feeding close in.
Sure I caught not only fish but a heavy cold that had me miss a few days fishing.
I met a few really great people whilst there Viktoria and Markro Hart were good fun and we had a few drinks late into the evening in the bar, with Freddie the bar man making his version of Bailey’s which of course was called Freddies.
Marko was from Sweden and of course spoke perfect English and he fished too. He was to be my fishing partner each evening.
He would use the light rod and I would use the shark rod. Marko caught a good few smaller fish. For me I had the one shark but I had a good bites that buckled the rod over but no more hook up’s.
I had such great fun fishing and laughing the days away. In fact it was so good we have
booked to go again next October.
