Cape Verde Nov 2018

Our annual trip to Boavista one of the islands of Cape Verde for a holiday came along so fast. Mrs P and I had arranged to meet Viktoria and Marko from Sweden there for some fishing and R&R. We had met them a few years ago and kept in touch since. We were also met with Jo and Wilf whom we often meet up there. So the boys would be fishing and the girls resting or something along those lines.

The boys would fish 8.45 to 10.30am trying to catch some bait for shark fishing during the afternoon from 3.30pm through to 5.45pm.

There were a large number of shark fishermen there this year so word must be getting out how good it is.

Our first job was to get some prawns from the restaurant which we did. These are used to catch the smaller fish.

We caught plenty of these each day.

Our first shark session gave Marko a fine black tipped shark. His very first one ever, so an excellent result.

The next day it was Wilfs turn and he landed a beautiful shark after an epic battle.

I had one take that took line from the reel but no hookup. Still I’m not unhappy about not catching one providing others are.

Wilf hooked a beautiful bonito fish at least that’s what we were told. It took about 10 minutes to land the thing on light line. Great job Wilf.

Marko and I were certainly not blessed with larger fish. But again I was not too fussed.

The girls would join us at the end of each evening as we packed up for a sun downer in the bar at 6pm.

Luck continued with Wilf getting another small shark. It was interesting that there were some UK anglers there who fished until 8pm which gave them 2 hrs of darkness. It was then that the larger sharks came in to feed. They had some over 40lbs, and plenty of them.

Marko wasn’t having much luck with his new rod but persevered none the less.

The winds got up for a couple of days followed by a swell and waved several metres high. Fishing was impossible for 3 days which was a disappointment.

Marko had lost these days but he still had his very first shark to remember.

Wilf, Jo, Mrs. P and I waved Marko and Viktoria off as they left to return to Sweden. I hope they will return again next year.

The next day was to my last day fishing. The waves were huge but we still managed to catch a few smaller fish. The beach had taken such a battering that a new sand bank had developed just off the shore line. This pushed the fish out further and most difficult to cast far enough. The morning session was cut short.

I was determined to fish the afternoon just to finish off the holiday. Jo and Mrs P would join us to celebrate the end of the holiday. Mrs P had bought down some beer and bubbles.

Thanks for a great holiday Wilf

The sunset was wonderful as we fished until the end of the light.

For sure we are planning to return next year as it’s a special place were we have special times with special people and friends.
