Chew Valley lake and a new pb brown trout

After returning from holiday in Aruba it was time to fish on the famous Chew Valley lake. Normally Andy and I fish for pike or perch on this awesome venue. In the past we have had great catches of perch to be fair the pike fishing has been disappointing for me. I think in all the years I have fished it I’ve only had one double.

We arrived to find the normal hospitality van serving tea burgers and breakfast baps. We were fishing from the boat. We soon had the tackle and mud weights etc on the grass close to the jetty.

It was a beautiful sunrise with mist covering the lake.

Life jackets on we loaded the gear into the boat fired up the motor and set off in the pea soup mist.

We fished a few places where the sounder gave good drop offs and little weed. 4 places and still no pike. There was a perfect calm on the lake which I had seldom seen.

Eventually our last stop was close to the jetties where we trying for perch. Plenty were caught however it was really busy so we set ourselves down by the sailing club building. Out went the dead baits. We normally take it in turns to hit the runs on the deadbaits.

It wasn’t long before the floats were indicating activity from takes. It was very interesting they would rip off along the surface. We caught a couple of trout big brownies. I think I had 6 between 4lbs to 10lbs 7oz. Wonderful sport really.

Interspersed were a few pike, well 7 jacks. We probably caught more pike on our boat then any others and it’s just bad luck that they were small ones.

So no blanks for us but plenty for others, plus some good 30lb plus pike.

It’s a stunning lake for sure with lots of surprises.
