Great Somerford Bristol Avon

Well I’ve just had two weeks break one was on holiday in Dubai and the other was for a cold that I contracted whilst there. That will teach me for having such a good time.

I was desperate to get out and wet a line again after what seemed like an eternity. I had missed the rain we had a couple of weeks ago, where the river rose and some good barbel were caught. The level was down again to 0.81m which is reasonably normal. I thought about trying for some roach in a weir pool at Great Somerford. Unfortunately for me the river flow was just too strong to judge where the hemp  and pellets were going and after a couple of small chub I moved to a bend that had a steady flow but I knew contained some good chub. The river though looked lifeless.

After putting in some 6mm, 8mm and 10mm pellets and hemp the whole swim came alive with fish thumping around trying to get at the feed. I only fished at about 3-4ft and rubber banded the pellets on the hook (size 16) . It was noticeable that the hair rig hook lengthdefinatly caught more chub than the standard side hook pellet. With the side hooking pellet I kept on bumping them off.

And in a matter of 1.5 hours I must have had about 8 chub from the swim. Mostly about the 1-3lbs size, however I did catch one of 4lbs 5oz. The critical point though was to keep the feed of pellets and hemp going in. So it turned out to be a good 2 hrs fishing and worth getting out.
