October 22nd Lacock
I only had a couple of hour’s again to wet a line and I wanted to go and look at the area around Lacock. There are some good chub and roach that frequent a few swims. It was these that I wanted to just have a look and see what the swims looked like. My tactics/approach was to be banded pallet on a 3 BB Avon style float and a size 14 hook. Feeding hemp and mixed pellet size. The banded pellet was to be 8mm.
The morning was very cold we had a frost and as I walked across the field ice crystals built up on my boots. To tell you the truth I spent more time walking and talking to the anglers than I did fishing. But hey ho it was good to be out on such a beautiful day.
What surprised me was the number of anglers about, but to be fair it was Friday and it is a popular day on this fishery. I fished a swim where during the summer I had seen plenty of chub with some over the 4lb mark. There is a willow in the river and they tend to sit just behind in the slack and the run off from this.
The swim always produces and didn’t fail this time. I caught about 8 chub from there before they became spooked. The good thing about using pellet is that you know nothing small is going to take the bait. The chub size was not that great with fish up to 3lbs they still fought well on my 15 ft Hardy Marksman float rod.
There were a couple of swims that I wanted to give 30 or so in but they contained barbel anglers. I did manage a few more chub of a couple of ponds or so from another swim. However the flow was less than idea and with this method you need to give the chub less time for a second thought. You need them to react fast in a streamy flow and not in a lazy fashion. Maybe when we have had some rain I’ll be back.
