Perch fishing
We had plenty of the rain over the weekend and Andy (you should have been here yesterday) Cowley and I decided to try for some perch on a commercial. We arrived to find one other angler there and he headed off to fish for perch.
Andy and I decided to face the wind and fish next to each other. The bait was to be prawns fished on a light ledger and spraying maggots over the baited area. There were a few other perch fishers turning up during the day. The wind not being too cold was acceptable.
I was the first to get a bite and started playing a carp with that the other rod tore off so Andy was playing the carp while I landed a tench of about 2lbs. The carp was about 8lbs.
Then disaster I hooked a good perch of perhaps 3lbs and played it to the net then the hook came out. I was not too pleased.
A bit later on I had a fast bite and landed a nice small perch of 1lbs 14oz so no blanking for me. I had another carp a little later this one was 13lbs and a nice common. Now I don’t like landing these big brown monsters.
As the afternoon wore on Andy had a nice perch of 2lbs 3oz so was pleased to be off he mark.
The fishing was not brilliant however Andy and I seemed to be catching more than others. So we must be doing something right.
I then had a good perch of 2lbs 4oz. I was pleased with this fish as a 2lb perch is a good size.
I was getting plenty of twitches which I suspect were liners from the carp.
I had one more run which resulted in a lovely perch of 2lbs 12oz so was very happy about this.
It was getting towards dark now and Andy had a really jerky take which resulted in a lovely looking perch of 3lbs 5oz. It was fat but not full of spawn. He was really happy with the result as was I.
That was it for the day. A great result and top rods on the lake.
I did return a couple of days later with the temps of 13c the carp and tench were feeding on my prawns. I did manage one small perch of 12oz. Reminder to ones self don’t fish in mild weather conditions.
